Where to Put Stickers on Your Truck (and Where Not To)

A good sticker on a truck says who you are before you ever step out of the cab. But placement matters: put it in the right spot and it'll look great for years; put it in the wrong one and it can get scraped off by a wiper, block your view or even earn you a ticket. Here's where to put stickers on a truck, and where not to.

The best places for truck stickers

  • Back window, lower corners: the classic spot. A 6" or 8" sticker in the lower left or right corner is easy to read and stays out of your line of sight.
  • Tailgate: a big, flat surface that's perfect for an 8" sticker. Apply it to clean paint, not over chrome trim or badges.
  • Rear side windows: on crew cabs, the small rear side windows are a great place for a 4" or 6" sticker.
  • Toolbox: truck bed toolboxes are made for stickers. Cover it with 4" to 6" designs. See toolbox stickers.
  • Bumper: the original spot for a bumper sticker, as long as it's a smooth, painted or plastic area.

Where NOT to put stickers

  • The windshield: most states strictly limit what can go on a windshield. Keep it clear.
  • Front side windows: these need to stay clear so you can see mirrors and traffic, and many states restrict them too.
  • The middle of the back window: keep your view through the rearview mirror clear.
  • In the wiper's path: if your back window has a wiper, keep stickers out of its sweep or the blade will wear the edges.
  • Over the license plate, lights or third brake light: never cover anything that needs to be seen.

Rules vary by state, so if you're unsure, check your state's vehicle laws before you stick.

How to apply a sticker to a truck

  1. Wash and dry the spot, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Apply in the shade on a mild day, not on hot or freezing glass or paint.
  3. Use a piece of tape as a hinge on bigger stickers so they go on straight.
  4. Smooth from the center out with a credit card and press the edges firmly.
  5. Wait 24 hours before washing the truck.
